French Business Confidence Rises on Exports, Inventory Building

April 9, 2010 by France Business Action

French business confidence climbed in March, helped by demand for French exports and customers building inventories.
The increase suggests that February’s decline was a blip after more than a year of gains that were driven by France’s economic recovery. French companies are benefiting as a weakening euro makes their wares less expensive relative to foreign rivals at a time when retailers are building inventories run down last year, economists said.
“The recovery is taking root, as it is underpinned by the inventory cycle,” said Pierre-Olivier Beffy, chief economist at Exane BNP Paribas in Paris. “Even more importantly, export demand is already benefiting from the weakening euro.”
French exports rose to 30.4 billion euros in February from 30.2 billion euros in January, helped by the delivery of more aircraft by Airbus SAS and demand for pharmaceutical products, the customs department said yesterday.
